Enigma and Ulrich first interact in Chapter 7 of the main story, where they are shown to have quite a negative relationship. They work together with Lucy in order to find the 'Storm' immunity solution. (which they succeed in, btw)

Their dynamic is like a unhappy marriage that should've broken up 5 years ago. They fight all the time but somehow they are always in orbit of each other. I'm not sure how to put it.

It doesn't help that Adler hasn't had any meaningful social connection in 8 years and Ulrich, being non-human, simply cannot relate to human needs and experiences. It's the beautiful, pathetic kind of anti-social

Their contrast in Vereinsamt is very jarring. On one hand, we have Ulrich, the rational, competent team leader and Awakened who holds a more anti-human view. On the other, we have the humanocentrist whose sister just Fucking Died mind you and who has been in a 8-year life slump, who can't keep his office clean, and who is just a mess in general.

Their dynamic has the arcanist/human racial conflict woven into it, a core, recurring theme in Reverse:1999. It is definitely a factor that drives their discontent

Ironically, they work quite well together when either one is not blaring sarcastic comments at the other, as shown in Part 8 of Ulrich's Side Story.

I also enjoy them as a trio with Lucy becausee lucy is my favourite character ever and anything comes out of her mouth is straight fire and burns shakespeare to ashes and she is a place of mediation

Chapter 7 - Vereinsamt: They first interact when Lucy gets Enigma to join the cryptography team that Ulrich leads. Enigma tells them all to give up on decoding the thing they were working on and Ulrich gets fucken pissed and later complains to Lucy about him. bro its been so long since i have watched vereinsamt i dont even remember

Later, when Enigma is watching Lucy test the "Storm" immunity ritual on herself he is like WHAT THE HELL SHE IS GOING TO DIE! and then Ulrich is like SHUT UP ADLER YOU KNOW NOTHING. and then lucy stirs again and then ulrich explains how the awakened can keep reviving or smth liike that

Anyway they interact a lot and it has been a year since i have rewatched vereinsamt fully and im getting tired of making summaries so just watch it please. its so good. its the best reverse 1999 chapter by miles.

From The Depths Of Space: Ulrich's side story takes place over multiple years. The first part starts with Ulrich visiting unconcious Adler and talking with his sister after he was hospitalised for alcohol poisoning and food poisoning simultaneously.

They interact again in Part 6, where it is now during chapter 6 of the main story. It is Adler's 28th birthday and Ulrich and Dora congratulate him on behalf of his sister.

In Part 8, it is now post-chapter 7. Enigma goes to the Foundation headquarters to tell Ulrich to stop his 'hunger strike' and to do actual work. Anyway they go back to Laplace and figure out the usage of Ulrich's oscilloscope and we get a wholesome CG of them looking at an image of a nebula. Yay

Pre-Storm Protocol (2.8 ver): Throughout the gamemode, Adler sometimes pops up and says a sarcastic comment or two. If you play on the hardest gamemode and do the secret ending, you follow a quest line where Ulrich believes he must demonstrate Laplace's empathy to the NPCs inside the simulation. Enigma tells Ulrich to stop wasting his time and to follow the actual objectives of the simulation. At the end, Enigma gets fed up and the final boss is some kind of thing he made i guess.

Chapter 7 - Vereinsamt

Enigma: Will you do the experiments yourself, Ulrich?
Ulrich: Of course. I am not some emotional, unhelpful little punk.
— Instead of his usual witty comeback, Enigma simply shakes his head in a slow motion.
Enigma: Life has a wicked sense of humor. My mentor, my classmates, my colleagues, each of them deserved to live more than me. But they're all gone now. There's only me talking to you, alive, useless.
Enigma: Am I going to see your names on that list too, Ulrich?
— In this rare moment, he lowers his head.
— But soon, he raises his arms and slaps the man hard on his back.
Ulrich: Spare me the feelings, human.
Ulrich: Though I will take back my sarcastic jabs at you, it is not something a leader should do.
— He awkwardly pats the human on the shoulder, a clumsy attempt at friendliness.

Ulrich: Don't be ridiculous, Adler! We are not household appliances!

Lucy: I understand your concern, but I have not heard anything about the incapacitation of Adler Hofmann.
Ulrich: Incapaci—What? He got a few scratches at most. The guy barely touched him.
Lucy: So he is fine. I am glad we agree. Is there anything else you would like to report?
Ulrich: ...

Lucy: Oh.
— From the other end of the corridor, the subject of their argument approaches, looking deeply upset and clutching a stack of papers.
— Clearly, he has heard every word they have just said.
Lucy: I am relieved you survived your altercation.
Lucy: What would you like to report?
Enigma: ...
Ulrich: ...
— Their eyes meet, making both of them squirm uncomfortably. This is undoubtedly one of the most awkward moments in both their careers.
— After a prolonged silence, Ulrich steps back and walks away.
— Without even looking back at him, Enigma begins his report in a low voice.

Ulrich Side Story - From The Depths Of Space

— On the hospital bed, the rescued individual's breathing maintains a steady rhythm. He's still lost in a deep sleep.
Ulrich: Is he still in danger?
Hofmann: Not for now. Adler's vitals have stabilised.
Ulrich: It's a miracle. I've never heard of anyone surviving a fall from the sixth floor of a building.
Hofmann: He didn't fall six floors. The railings in the Laplace corridor stopped him.
— The investigator is meticulous. She wont allow such an exaggerated claim to be thrown out without rebuttal.
Hofmann: What he did to is consume expired food and an excessive amount of alcohol, resulting in simultaneous food and alcohol poisoning.
Ulrich: Whether in mind or body, humans seem far too fragile in the face of the "Storm."
— He stops himself from speaking further, realizing a little too late how inappropriate his comment is.
Hofmann: You aren't wrong.
— Fortunately, the patient's sister agrees.

Ulrich: How long do you intend to indulge in this 'humanitarian' management idleness?
Ulrich: You can't even keep the room clean!
Enigma: Oh, so you've returned from holiday as a sanitation inspector, have you?
Ulrich: I'm still the leader of the cryptography team. During my absence and since my return, the team has been running efficiently.
Ulrich: The number of internal complaints I've recieved has significantly decreased.
Enigma: You should give your work report to that tin can, not me. Now leave.

Chapter 7.5 - Intermission

Vertin: How's Laplace been with Lucy gone?
Enigma: *sigh*
Enigma: She dumped a mess on Ulrich and I.
Enigma: The research team will become its own department and focus on studying the Equilibrium Umbrella.
Enigma: And Ulrich and I are going to head it. Once he's done with his "hunger strike," we'll have to decide who's going to be in charge of all the boring stuff Madam Lucy couldn't be bothered to deal with.
Enigma: ...stuff like politics, getting along with people, and working with other organizations.
Enigma: I must say that Laplace is being overly technocentric here.
Enigma: They couldn't find anyone else to head the department except for this unsociable researcher and this Awakened thing that can't even show emotions like a normal person.
Enigma: The social scene at Laplace is going to be a disaster.
